The 3-Step Carbide Specification That Saves 30 % Tool Cost on Aluminium Face-Milling
Aluminium is soft-until you need mirror-flatness across a 400 mm aerospace panel.
A German fixture supplier recently compared Cutoutil's 45° face-mill Ø50 mm with polished YT05 carbide inserts against their existing 60-tooth solid-carbide cutter.
Result: Ra 0.32 µm achieved at 6 000 rpm, 0.2 mm/tooth feed, no chip welding. Tool life per edge rose from 96 m to 135 m, and because each YT05 insert offers four usable edges, cost per meter dropped exactly 30 %.
The exercise took three easy steps:
Match insert geometry to spindle power-Cutoutil software calculates shear angle in 30 seconds.
Polish the rake face to <0.2 µm roughness; we do this as standard on YT05.
Run 8 % internal coolant through the cutter body; our 45° face-mill has 6 exit ports straight to the cut.
No capital investment, no new CAM licence, just a cutter head and five inserts shipped from stock. We keep 18 000 aluminium-grade inserts in our Changsha warehouse, so 90 % of orders leave within 48 hours. If you mill 6-series or 7-series profiles and want to try the same comparison, send us your maximum spindle power and cutter diameter. We will return a free cutting-data report and a unit-price list within 24 h. Reach Vikey Han at cutoutil@hanvitools.com or Skype: cutoutil.sales.
