Brazing function of road milling drill
Carbide tips are firmly brazed to the steel body. Once the extremely high temperatures created during milling are applied to the part, the carbides in the tool tip and the steel of the pick are subject to varying degrees of expansion. At this time, the brazing method plays an important role. Brazing can absorb those extreme tensile stresses by the tool reaching high temperatures during milling.
Many manufacturers use copper-zinc solder to weld the carbide tip to the steel body, and the welding temperature can reach 900 degrees Celsius or more. However, the expansion coefficients of cemented carbide, copper-zinc solder and the base metal are very different, so they have different degrees of shrinkage. The shrinkage dimension is cemented carbide < metal steel < copper. Therefore, there is a large tensile stress between them, resulting in a decrease in the welding strength.
Our factory adopts silver welding process to manufacture road picks. It is expensive, but can achieve an important brazing effect during the milling process.
Summary: Careful brazing of the tungsten carbide tip and steel body ensures a tight bond of the material.
